Nappy pins, also known as safety pins, can be surprisingly versatile tools for backpacking, hiking, and camping.
I used them for the first time on my second multi-day hike on the Soonwaldsteig last week, and I think they’re brilliant!
What’s a nappy pin?
A nappy pin is a type of pin used to fasten cloth diapers, typically featuring a plastic or metal head and a sharp point.
It is different from a safety pin in that it’s specifically designed for securing diapers, with a greater focus on preventing accidental pricks or damage to the baby’s skin.
In other words, it’s harder for them to come undone and puncture or loose your precious gear 🤓
I noticed the plastic is slightly less durable than metal. I’ve had to replace two nappy nips after snagging them on something, which caused the plastic to tear.
How to use nappy pins for backpacking
I’m still exploring smart use cases for them.
But so far I’ve been using them to secure clothing to the clothes line in strong winds, or to attach items that would otherwise be too small like a sponge.
Another thing I like to use them for is to attach socks to my backpack so they can dry.
Without nappy pins, it would be pretty easy to lose them if I would only use the elastic rope.
Besides that, you could use them for a bunch of other small things.
Attach your keys inside your pack so you won’t lose them.
Repair damaged zippers or clothing.
Attach light items to the outside of your pack for quick access.
Attach ropes to trees by using them like little carabiners so you don’t have to make knots.
A whole bunch of things 🤗
And the best part?
They’re only 1 gram or so, and pretty strong.
