Fruity overnight oats for breakfast

I love bread with cheese for breakfast, but that isn’t so easy on trail without something to cool the cheese 😋🧀

That’s why I go for my second favourite breakfast on trail: overnight oats 🙌

They’re lightweight, provide a lot of energy, and are super tasty.

What you’ll need

For this dish, you need oats and some freeze-dried fruits of your choosing

Personally, I think blueberries and raspberries fit well, but strawberries probably also taste great.

IngredientAmount
Oats100 g / 389kcal
Dried blueberries5 g / 17 kcal
Dried raspberries10 g / 34 kcal
Powdered full fat milk (optional but tasty)10 g / 49 kcal
Sugar (if you like sweet)5 g / 20 kcal
Total weight / calories130 g / 409 kcal

Putting it together is very easy 👨‍🍳

Simply add the oats, dried fruit, and powdered milk to a reusable container

It should look like this:

My batch was 358 grams for 3 portions

You can easily store it for months because it’s all dried, so I would recommend creating a whole batch right away.

But before you commit to making 20 portions, maybe try the recipe first 🤗

Cooking your meal

For overnight oats, you don’t need to boil water.

Before you go to bed, pour 140 ml of water over all the ingredients into a container.

(it’s also possible to just add the water to the ziploc, whatever you prefer)

Stir it once so everything is soaked in water, and close the container.

Now, wait until the morning so that everything is soaked.

Tip: in case you forgot to add water the night before, add it in the morning and wait 2 hours for it to get at least a little bit creamy.

And here’s what it looks like 🤓

It tastes better than it looks, pinky promise

Feel free to add any toppings, you can vary a lot with overnight oats so it doesn’t get boring:

  • Chopped Nuts: Sprinkle chopped nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans for added crunch and protein.
  • Seeds: Top with chia seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, or sunflower seeds for extra texture and a boost of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Cocoa Nibs: Sprinkle some cocoa nibs for a chocolatey crunch without the added sugar.
  • Coconut Flakes: Toasted or untoasted coconut flakes can provide tropical flavour and a hint of crunch.
  • Spices: Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom to spice things up.

Just make sure not to add these things before you soak them; that probably won’t work well

Enjoy your backpacker breakfast! 🤗
